The UCalgary guide to *actually* enjoying winter
What you need to know to stay warm, safe and active during the colder months
Winter is now upon us, and with it comes heavy snowfalls, icy sidewalks, and freezing temperatures. Warm winter clothing is only one aspect to consider when you’re preparing for the season.
Here are some practical tips to help you stay comfortable, healthy and safe so you can enjoy the best aspects of winter in Calgary!
Check the weather first: Calgary often experiences drastic weather changes throughout a single day. Always check the forecast before you leave so you know how to dress appropriately. Temperatures can still be freezing despite clear skies, especially in Calgary; the sunniest city in Canada!
- Wear layers: Layering is essential in winter, allowing you to adapt to changing indoor and outdoor temperatures. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating middle layer, and finish with a waterproof and/or windproof outer layer.
- Practice safe walking: Walking on icy sidewalks can be tricky, but you can improve your stability by doing the “penguin shuffle”. Take short, shuffling steps with your weight slightly forward to maintain your balance on slippery surfaces.
- Stay warm by taking an indoor route: Take advantage of the UCalgary’s extensive indoor pathway network, which connects most campus buildings. These tunnels provide a warm and convenient way to get around without braving the cold.
- Get sunlight: The shorter, darker days of winter can sometimes impact mood and productivity. Being exposed to as much natural light as you can or using a Vitamin D supplement can help combat seasonal affective symptoms. Sunlight simulators and bright indoor lighting can also make a difference. Don’t forget the on-campus wellness resources available to support you if you need.
- Stay healthy: Winter is also cold and flu season, so consider getting a flu shot, eating a balanced diet, and staying well-rested. Indoor exercise can help you stay fit and energized during the season as well; try going to the university Fitness Centre (KNB 155) (the second floor is usually quieter!) or the Racquet Centre to play Squash or Racquetball, as well as trying the bouldering wall.
